Bringing Greek love to New York! (With a helping hand from Patricia Field)
When trying to make a name for yourself in the USA, it heps to land on american shores with several million sales already under your belt.Being idolised by an entire nation doesn hurt either. But this is New York and its thick skinned inhabitants are notoriously difficult to impress - phrases like 'triple platinum' roll over us like fountain water off a pigeons backside. But when New York fashion maven Patricia Fied issues a ringing endorsement of your talent Manhattan stands at attention.
Such is the case with Anna Vissi, the iconic Greek chanteuse who recently relocated to Gotham in the hopes of cracking the hard shell of the US pop market. From the looks of things she seems to be well on her way: Call me her first stab at an english language single since moving Stateside has already landed in rotation on Ktu radio. And with a performance at Miami's White Party this weekend crownds will be given a special glipse of what Vissi has in store for American audiences.
''im anxious about it - all i now is that ill be wearing something white'' Vissi laughs of her pending White Party turn.''But i love live performance and i cant wait to do it''.
''Anna's got a great heart and her voice is fabulous'' says Field.''Right now im just trying to introduce her to people in New York''
Back in her native Greece, g-men comprise much of Vissi's fan base. Its a demographic swath the singer chaks up to 'being very openminded. Also i was the first Greek artist who did dance music. Before(me) all dance music in Greece was imported.''. Since moving to New York In September, Vissi's familiarity with Gotham's queen contingent has grown exponentially thank to her bosom gal-pal status with Manhattan's Mathron of Fashion Field, whose friendship with the singer began 2 years ago after seeing Vissi perform at the Theater at Madison Square Garden. ''I went to Astoria and picked up a double extra large t-shirt with her image on it at a greek record store and made a dress out of it and at the concert i threw the dress onstage'' Field remembers.''We became friends after that over the next couple of years''.
For the time being, at least, Vissi is enjoying the girls nights out with Field, content to experience the city with an anonymity unafforded in her homeland. And shes right to revel in it - because it likely wont last long - not if Vissi's pas successes are any indiction, and not if Patricia Field has anything to say about it.
