Boisterous cries of “Anna! Over here, Anna, over here! We love you, Anna!” greeted the CAF float as it glided along Fifth Avenue on April 10, a proud participant in New York City’s 2005 Greek Independence Day Parade.
The “Anna” that was provoking such enthusiastic attention was, of course, international singing sensation Anna Vissi, CAF’s special guest at the Parade. The thousands of spectators lining the Avenue were ecstatic to see the Greek superstar, currently enjoying a smash on the American charts with her English language single, “Call Me.” Her presence on the CAF float helped draw attention to thalassemia, and CAF took advantage of the situation by distributing informational material all along the route.
Ms. Vissi generously spent the day with the patients, family members, friends and staff of CAF and happily posed for pictures with and signed autographs for her legion of fans.
“CAF cannot adequately express its gratitude to Anna Vissi for giving of herself this way,” said Jayne Restivo, CAF National Executive Director. “Her willingness to appear as CAF’s special guest at the Parade enabled us to gain the attention of thousands of people who need to be informed about thalassemia and its presence in the Hellenic American community.”
CAF thanks Ms. Vissi and all who marched with the CAF float for helping to spread the word about thalassemia.
