Athens stopover for ITV Vissi confident in UK interview
ITV, Britain's leading commercial TV company, dedicated one of its cornerstone programmes to Greece and the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 this week. The highlight of the special edition of Good morning television featured a live interview with Greek participant Anna Vissi on location in Athens. Broadcasting live from the Greek capital, popular host Ben Shephard introduced Anna to British viewers as "the Greek Madonna" and quizzed the singer on her hopes and aspirations for this year's contest. Anna was unequivocal in stating that her goal is first place, and added that grand preparations for the final are under way.
UK - a friend of Greece! Host Ben shared his enthusiasm for the home entry this year by confirming Anna as one of his own firm favourites. On the topic of possible UK points for Greece, he suggested "we are fond of our Greek friends, and it seems we have the same taste in music". His enthusiasm and Anna's confidence will have been shared with an estimated six million UK viewers who tune into the morning program each day.
The Greek edition of Ben's slot was part of a special week of destinations which sees the presenter jet across the globe from India to Dubai, through Athens, Tokyo and finally Australia on Friday - if he can overcome the jetlag!
ITV is the second leading terrestrial channel in the UK, along with the national broadcaster the BBC. Whilst the BBC are responsible for the Eurovision Song Contest participation, ITV have handled coverage and participation in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest since its inception in 2003.
