March 11, 2005 - On April 10, thousands of New Yorkers who are excitedly straining to glimpse their favorite European singing sensation will also get a little education about thalassemia. That’s because CAF will be manning a float in New York’s Greek Independence Day Parade – a float that will also proudly boast the presence of Anna Vissi, the singer whose glorious voice and captivating presence have made her one of Greece’s reigning superstars.
“I am thrilled that CAF is participating in the Parade this year and honored that Anna Vissi will be able to join us as our very special guest,” says CAF National Executive Director Jayne Restivo. “Once again, Ms. Vissi demonstrates her willingness to help all those born with thalassemia and her commitment to helping CAF in the fight against this terrible disease.”
Noting that people of Greek descent comprise one of the populations most often affected by thalassemia, Ms. Restivo adds that the Parade “is an excellent opportunity for us to expand our educational efforts in the Greek community while at the same time celebrating the Hellenic heritage of so many of CAF’s members.” CAF will distribute information about thalassemia to the crowds along Fifth Avenue and also will be airing a special Public Service Announcement during the televised portion of the Parade.
The Parade, which will run along Manhattan’s famous Fifth Avenue between 61st and 79th Streets, is sponsored by the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York and celebrates the 184th anniversary of Greece’s independence. Dinos Rallis is the Chair of the Parade Committee.
CAF welcomes those wishing to march in the Parade as part of CAF’s contingent. Please contact Eva Chin at (800) 522-7222 ext 211 by March 25, 2005 for more information.
