Thanks Amrali for the lyrics !!

As for the meaning of "Misirlou" , actually nobody knows better than me what such a word does mean !! I'm living in Turkey ! In turkish  "Misir" = Egypt and the suffix "li" means "the one who is from" , so Misirli (as it has to be , but in greek the "i" without the "dot" cannot be pronounced , and it becomes ...Misirlou ) is "the one from Egypt" .

The same suffix is used to create words meaning "with something " , i.e. when you say "peynirli" , it means "with cheese " as "peynir" = cheese in turkish !

End of the ...lesson , back to the songs !!!!

keep those lessons going Star !!!! I quite enjoy them

My grandparents are from Asia Minor, and my mother speaks fluent Turkish. My gramdmother learnt Greek when she turned 17. My grandfather was born in Ismir, and my grandmother was born in Amasia

Iyi aksamlar * Stacey (*you can ask your mom !)

Well , it seems one day , we , the "old ladies of the forum" may find out we are ...relatives

I'm living in Istanbul but I have friends in Izmir and have visited that beautiful city twice . It resembles Thessaloniki , where also half of my family (my father's sisters , my cousens , cousins , nephews and nieces) lives . As for Amasia , it is an amazing city with tombs carved on the rocks , the typical old houses and their romantic reflection on the river . When I went there I felt I discovered a new Florence in the middle of Asia Minor ! In Ottoman times they used to send the princes of the crown to Amasia to be trained before undertaking the hard duties of the sultan ..

Amasia is also famous with its apples ( a "pale" red , not so big and quite sweet kind) .

apple = elma in turkish

Hmm , let me add something for Anna to conclude today's lesson : I think I have heard the turkish version of "call me" on the radio , I have to search !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ciao !

Selamin aleikum Amr Ali !!!

Stacey , one more lesson : "Ali" means also "great" in "old turkish/ottoman " language that is a mixture of arabic , persian etc languages . So, the "big gate to the palace" was called Bab-i Ali , as for "zat-i ali " , it was used as a  compliment to a person like "your highness" ...

And now that I have searched the "users" I found out that Amr Ali was from Egypt !! That's why he's so keen on ..Egyptian girls (I used "he" as Ali is a masculin name in turkish )

In the final ceremony of the Olympics ,Anna has also performed "karabiberim" etc together with others I think , unfortunately in 2004 I watched only the last part of he ceremony - with "Athina" being sang by all etc- because I was in Tenedos , one of the two -once greek - islands of Turkey in Aegean (the other is Imvros ..)  . Karabiberim means "my black pepper" where "kara" = black and "biber"="pepper"

Sorry for being boring with all these "lessons" , I have to post some jokes in another topic !!!!

Or ...to curse (=Despina Vandi)

No no !!! you are not being boring at all !!! What you're writing is quite interesting and beautiful ! It all makes sense. I love this topic .... it just keeps on reminding me about that magical night. The best ever rendition of Misirlou I've ever heard, by our one and only "misirlou" Anna Vissi ....

I'm going to go back to your message Star and study it again.

Star, I am so curious to learn about the origin of the Greek people from Asia Minor. How did they come about ? Where did those Greeks come from and settle in Asia Minor?

Thank you..
